No wonder that so many of us burn out when the first rungs of the ladder feel so tempting to ascend. When moving up a gear, whether it’s working harder and longer, taking on new challenges, juggling multiple responsibilities, our minds and bodies get extra resources to cope with the demands placed upon us. They make us feel useful and good about ourselves.
There is excitement at new challenge, high expectations, an energy boost as we get up for the encounters ahead. We experience a dopamine hit of reward as we get recognition and gratitude for our early efforts and promise. And so therefore, we start to see the human needs of validation and approval, leading to a lack of boundary setting as the people-pleaser in us takes over.

There is also some nervousness and trepidation, but it is balanced with a confidence that we have got what it takes.

At this stage it’s vital that you think about the change you are about to make, and why you are doing it. Is this congruent with your own values, or are you looking to impress? Worse, feeling as if you will be perceived negatively if you don’t step up.
Do you really know where you are going, what your ‘why’ is, and if this change is consistent with it? This is the stage where you do have time to contemplate if you are making the right choices and putting the right habits in place to stay healthy.
The Burnout Ladder® is a concept, a programme, and now – a book – that will give you information and practical tips on why we get on this ladder, find out how far we have climbed, and how to get off it before getting burned.
